Praying for the Body of Christ in Afghanistan
Let us unite with them in one Spirit, asking for God’s miraculous, merciful intervention.
I want to appeal to you, as the news cycle conveniently shifts from crisis to crisis, sparing bad actors of proper accountability, to remember our brothers and sisters trapped in Afghanistan under the terrible, evil rulership of the Taliban.
You might have heard that Glenn Beck, through his Nazarene Fund, was helping to get thousands of Christians out of the country very successfully. Until the U.S. Government got wind of it, that is. Here is what he told Tucker Carlson in a recent interview:
"The State Department has blocked us every step of the way. The State Department and the White House have been the biggest problem. Everyone else, everyone else, has been working together, putting aside differences, and trying to get these people to safety. The State Department and the White House have blocked us every single step of the way. In fact, an ambassador was called in Macedonia last night and told not to accept any of these people, as we were trying to get them off the tarmac here to keep the airport flowing and getting these Christians out. We haven’t really been able to move anybody for about twelve hours. Our mission is now changing greatly. We have to send people into even greater danger to try to smuggle these Christians out, who are marked not just for death, but to be set on fire alive because they're converted Christians."
This is the reality for Christians in Afghanistan. And our government, as you heard, shows no sympathy to them as a group. We must pray. We cannot forget that we are one body in our Lord, Jesus Christ. When they suffer, we suffer.
Let us pray for their safety, their witness against their enemies, and for a change of heart at the highest levels of our government. In fact, we must pray for a change of personnel at the highest levels of our government.
What we have witnessed from the woke leadership of people like General Mike Milley is appalling. Just this week, revelations from a new book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa revealed that while Donald Trump was President, Gen. Milley was conducting clandestine foreign policy operations to reassure the Chinese that Trump was not going to attack, going as far as telling them that he would tip them off if an attack were going to happen. He also instructed those under him not to take orders from President Trump unless he approved them personally.
Many are calling for his resignation following the explosive revelations. But he should have been removed long before that. The Afghanistan debacle happened with his full approval. Instead of planning for a flawless withdrawal from Afghanistan in the months before the deadline, he was spending his time worrying about “white rage” and the threat Donald Trump supporters pose to the nation.
Our nation’s elite leadership is without a north. And, lacking a moral compass, they have lost the ability to distinguish between right and wrong—between good and evil. Therefore, they see the Taliban as “helpful and useful” in the Afghan withdrawal and Glenn Beck’s efforts to help Christians as harmful.
We must pray. This blindness cannot be overcome with mere human efforts. Let us appeal to the Lord of the Heavens with all humility and confidence, knowing that He is Sovereign over all. We need not understand all. We know He who does, and we know that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
But let us not ignore the arduous challenges ahead for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. Instead, let us unite with them in one Spirit, asking for God’s miraculous, merciful intervention through it all— that His Name be magnified, His Gospel proclaimed, and His glory exalted in all nations.
Amen.
